Michael Roark is the Chief Executive Officer of UMUC Ventures. A recognized leader in higher education, Mr. Roark brings more than 25 years of experience in senior level positions across higher education, the private sector, and government. Before joining UMUC Ventures, Mr. Roark served as a vice president at Strayer University, leading in its academic and institutional effectiveness operations. During his tenure, he led the transformation of the academic experience of the lowest performing students, resulting in a nearly 50 percent improvement in one-year success rates for first-time students. Earlier, Mr. Roark served as a political appointee in the U.S. Department of Education as chief administrative officer to the Deputy Secretary of Education. He has held several high-level positions with AOL, LLC, culminating as chief financial officer for AOL Europe where he restructured operations into a unified global organization spanning three continents and reducing costs by over €50 million. Previously, Mr. Roark served as chief financial and administrative officer at The Corcoran Gallery of Art School of Art and Design where he oversaw an institutional budget of $22 million. Earlier in his career, Mr. Roark was a consultant and project leader with the Boston Consulting Group. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History from Stanford University and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
